I think it is generally wrong to talk about one’s own songs. We need to let them express themselves, let them tell what they tell and let the people take what they want, leave a wide space for the listener’s personal interpretation. What I am trying to do with my compositions is writing about the world I live in and doing it as honestly as I can. Therefore there is no need for explanations. If I thought that they needed an explanation, be sure I would not even write them.
Paul Simon
Song lyrics mostly need this great and complex crutch called music. Often the most beautiful songs read as you would read a poem do not make sense, do not hold, collapse; in more than 90% of cases. This makes me think a lot; it makes me think that it is a different job. And sometimes words evoke and sound good and tell so much if combined with functional music. Without that it is as if they were stopped, as if they did not have any more fuel.
Ivano Fossati
Sometimes I am writing something that I really cannot understand, and it is just this that stimulates me.
